The "Lemmensinstituut" (Faculty of Music, Performing Arts and Education of the "Hogeschool voor Wetenschap & Kunst") has built up a tradition of music education for more than a century. It was founded in 1879 by Jaak-Nikolaas Lemmens and was originally an institute for church music, with a course based on the study of Gregorian chant and the organ. Several decades ago the Institute developed into a complete Conservatorium, which offers training in all possible disciplines:

MUSIC

  • Composition
  • Conducting
  • Instrument/Singing
  • Jazz
  • Music Education
  • Music Therapy

DRAMATIC ARTS

  • Declamation

The campus bubbles with activity. Students give various concerts every day. A large concert is planned each week, which attracts eminent musicians from Belgium and abroad. In declamation performances and other programmes the spoken word is central. All students join in working on the performance of masterpieces from the past and the twentieth century, in projects spread all over the academic year. Thus for many years a tradition of performing Bach's passions has been built up. In the masterclasses and during international exchanges the students have the opportunity to meet foreign masters. After obtaining the master's degree one can opt for a specialisation in a particular discipline. Here too the student is involved in putting together a made-to-measure course of studies.

Student Life at Lemmensinstituut
The students' movement at Lemmensinstituut regroups two main activities: the student representation and the student council.
The first activity consists of representing the needs and questions of all our students in several boards and meetings, like Faculty Board, Academic Board and Social Services. The second is a little less serious one and organizes parties, sports activities, cultural affairs and many more "creative acts".
The representatives of Cluster can be contacted.

Culture
The Concertvereniging Lemmensinstituut organises weekly a concert freely accessible to anyone of the interested students of the Lemmensinstituut. Other students are welcome at a special student price.
